Within Beekenkamp Plants Ornamentals’ breeding program, we actively breed for sustainability. For example, we strive for disease resistance to reduce the use of plant protection products. Examples include mildew resistance in our Dreams Begonia and Pericallis POP. Another example is white fly resistance in our Poinsettia Superstars.
We are also working on the responsible management of fossil fuels. We are developing Kelos Celosia varieties that require less water and Pericallis POP varieties that can be grown at lower temperatures. To screen these traits in our gene bank, we conduct bioassays. These tests are conducted under controlled conditions in phytotrons specially designed for this purpose at the Beekenkamp Research and Development Center.
We regularly discover that similar traits are also present in other types of genetics. In such cases, we proceed to crossbreed, where our tissue culture laboratory can be useful. Although this process can be complex, we strive to promote sustainability.
Given the importance of sustainability, Beekenkamp has invested in appointing a specific researcher in the Research and Development department to fully focus on these sustainability aspects.
